Thursday night and into Friday afternoon I worked on the piece above for the Hive Gallery’s 24 Hour Show. All of the artists who participated in the show had one full day to make a piece of art on a 12″ x 12″ surface. I was in the show last year too, and I enjoy painting with such a short deadline. I’ve been trying to be a little more spontaneous and flexible with my artwork for a while now, because it is so easy for me to get lost in the details and spend days and days on my paintings. Making these relatively quick pieces help. For this new piece, I decided not to plan anything out, make no drawings and just go with it. It’s refreshing to just sit down and make something.
The opening reception for the 24 Hour Show was yesterday, September 3rd, but the artwork will be on display at The Hive all month long. There are probably somewhere around 50 artists who participate, and it is great to see what each artist comes up with. I was asked to be one of the five featured artists for the show along with Bethany Fischer, Jonathon B Baker, Jeffrey Hale and Brandon Voeller. These four, along with all of the other people involved, put me in good company!
The Hive is located in Trolley Square on the second floor in SLC. Stop on in and take a look around.
