"Azmothimon: Dragon of Swords" by Todd Powelson

I finished this new artwork, my Dragon of Swords (above), more than month ago toward the beginning of September and over the Labor Day holiday. I kept putting off sharing though, just because I couldn’t think of anything to say about it. I usually enjoy writing a blogpost for each new piece because it helps me organize and articulate my thoughts, but this dragon seems so straightforward to me saying much more than:

“The Dragon of Swords has fought many battles, been stabbed in the back repeatedly, but is still standing strong and ready to vanquish all the nonsense.”

.. feels unnecessary to me. At the same time, I love the way my new artwork turned out, and I want to share what I’ve made.

Turns out I can add a little more..

So years ago I got really into meditation. I’d regularly sit, close my eyes, breathe, and go inward. Because I’m such a visual person (I guess), while I do this, vivid landscapes and characters show up behind my eyes. I let them and just watch, relaxing into my body. At some point, dragons started to visit. I’d watch them fly through the sky, roam over the land. Sometimes it seemed like they’d notice me too, and I’d watch as they would get real close, right in front of my face. I didn’t mind at all, and was always very impressed.

At some point I decided I was meditating too much. I was spending too much time in my headspace, between my personal creative interests, my professional creative work.. well, yeah, adding an inward meditative practice started to feel excessive. I wanted to get out under the trees, a walking meditation, and spend more time with people (and pets!). I still sit, breathe, and meditate (it’s a blessing!), just not as much.

All them dragons, well, they’re still hanging around. I see one at the top of this post!
