One thing is for certain, Jonathon Baker is a talented and dedicated artist. Whenever I visit the Hive Gallery he is working on a new and interesting piece. I’ve been able to watch the progress some of his pieces go through, and that is a really cool. When I am working on my own art, I don’t like anybody watching (except maybe Anna), so I admire that he feels that comfortable with what he is making. Recently, I came upon his work in progress for his upcoming Star Wars Group Show, and it was excellent. I’m excited to see the finished piece.
Here is a what Jonathon has to say about his paintings:
“My art is a composition of the connections between people, and objects and, belief systems. I play with the concepts of spirituality and personality and the elements that make us who we are. I believe we give objects meaning by rearranging their original purpose. A branch on a tree is a branch on a tree but put it in a girls hair and it becomes a symbol, something with greater meaning and maybe even something with a higher purpose. I take this idea and I exaggerate it. I move it into a more fantastical metaphysical realm.
“I grew up on science fiction and fantasy books, comic books and cartoons. These things made it possible for me to see the world in a different way and I think that shows in my paintings. No one sees things the same way and I exploit that altered reality that exists within each of us and exaggerate it. My goal is to get the viewer to see things in a new light with a new purpose.”
Jonathon does more than allow you into his creative process, he also regularly teaches classes at the Hive. Currently, he is teaching a class for kids and you can learn more at:
